Wedding Dress Code 101

Dapper (1)

Ohh the age old question, what is okay (and not okay) to wear to a wedding? Well, we’re here today with our wedding experts to clear this up for everyone.

First and foremost, let’s start with the obvious. Don’t wear white! Just don’t do it! Don’t even think or consider the thought of wearing white or any color close to white! Unless the bride specifically states she wants every single one of her guests wearing white in her invitation, don’t do it. Not only will the bride shake her head and roll her eyes, her guests will be talking about you all night long.

In addition to the actual wedding day, don’t wear white to any wedding festivities as well. This means engagement parties, bachelorette parties, showers, rehearsal dinners, brunches…etc.

Don’t even wear a color that is close to white. If you have to ask “is this color too close to white?” then you’ve answered your own question. Steer clear of beige, champagne, cream, off-white, or any other super light color that could be mistaken for white. Even light yellows and pinks/blush can be tricky. You don’t want to take a picture, post it on social media and have people think you were THAT girl who wore white to someone’s wedding.

This isn’t a make or break situation, but if you can avoid wearing the color or style of the bridesmaid dresses you should. These days with all of the mismatching bridal trends, it’s hard to accomplish this, so don’t beat yourself up if you have already done this.

Black Tie

This is the most formal dress code out there, so you don’t want to mess around.

Ladies:  You’ll hear that a cocktail dress can be okay for a black tie wedding, but we don’t always agree with that. Depending on the length and look of the dress you can, but we’d rather not take that chance. If you’re attending a black tie wedding just wear a floor length dress. We’re not saying a full on ball gown – unless that’s something you want to wear. There are so many options out there and at Wonderland Bridal that you will be sure to find something that is affordable and adorable!

Fellas: Same sentiment. Don’t take the chance of being underdressed. You should be wearing a tuxedo. Again, there are so many options out there for you to remain fashionable and dressed appropriate for the integrity of the wedding you’re attending.

Black Tie Optional/Formal

Ladies: If you ask a lot of wedding stylists out there, they will say you shouldn’t wear anything but a floor length dress under these dress code terms as well, but we don’t necessarily agree with that. This is where your chic cocktail dress can come into play. Consider the length and formality of what the bridesmaids are wearing and venue where the wedding is being held to help you make this decision.

Fellas: Another wedding you should consider wearing a tux to. If not a tux, consider a formal dark suit and tie.

Semiformal or Dressy Casual

Ladies: This dress code can be intimidating in a way because of the amount of options out there. Dress somewhere in between formal and casual – for a lack of a better word. Consider the time of day the wedding is taking place. For a morning to afternoon wedding, consider pastels and light fabric. For an evening wedding opt for darker formal hues.

unnamed-4Fellas: Consider dress pants, linen pants – if you’re going to a beach wedding, and pair them with a button down shirt or polo.

We certainly hope we have cleared up any of your questions and concerns regarding dress codes at weddings. It can be a very tricky and sensitive topic for people, so return back to this blog post if you ever have any questions in the future. That’s what we are here for!

Love Story: Kaela & Anthony

We sat down with another beautiful Wonderland bride to get her love story. Meet Kaela & Anthony, who were married February 4th, 2017. Kaela wore one of our beautiful Stella York gowns and her bridesmaids wore Sorella Vita from Wonderland Bridal.

When and how did you meet?

Anthony and I met through mutual friends. My coworker kept trying to set us up. Finally after hanging out for a while we bonded over our shared love of sarcasm and silliness.

How long did you date before he popped the question?

We dated four years before he proposed.

How did he propose?

Anthony set up a whole scavenger hunt for me. I woke up to my best friend at my house telling me to get up and get dressed. Then she handed me a clue that sent me to the first place we met. He had a car that picked us up and drove us from clue to clue. At each clue I was met with different familiar faces of my friends and family and each time I collected another sunflower. The last clue sent me to a hotel on the beach. As I walked up to the rotunda Anthony got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. All of our closets friends and family were there too!

Where were you married and how did you pick the place?

We got married at Plantation Preserve in Plantation. A coworker suggested the place to us and as soon as we checked it out I could see myself marrying Anthony there.

What theme and/or colors have you chosen for your wedding and why?

Our colors pink, white and grey.

Where did you go for your honeymoon?

We went on a 8 day Caribbean Cruise for our Honeymoon!

Why did you chose Wonderland Bridal for your dream dress?

The same coworker that suggested our venue told me about Wonderland Bridal. As soon as I walked in I knew this was the place for me. Patti and Alicyn are super friendly and outgoing. They are detailed orientated and make sure everything goes well with your dress.  I just absolutely LOVED them!!!

Share your experience about your time with Wonderland Bridal.

They were friendly and helpful! They made my experience so special and give you their undivided attention. They know what they are doing and you will be so happy you chose them!

What was the best part of your wedding day?

The best part of my wedding day was listening to my husbands vows.

Any advice to future couples currently planning a wedding?

Give yourself plenty of time to plan and do as much as you can in the beginning. I did a lot of planning in the beginning that when it came closer to the time I was able to relax and enjoy this very special time. Also, don’t go crazy over small details. At the end of the day you are there to marry the person you love! Never forget that!

Love Story: Jena, Rey and their Fairytale Disney Wedding

We sat down with another beautiful Wonderland bride to get her love story. Meet Jena & Rey, who were married February 4th, 2017.

When and how did you meet?

Summer of 2008. After a night out, Rey found himself in need to get to his car. I was asked by Ramon, my friend and neighbor, to drive him and Rey to pick up Rey’s car. I arrived at the house and Rey introduced himself and jumped in the back seat. As a thank you for taking him to his car, Rey took me to breakfast. We talked for a while and he invited me to come to a party later that night. I went to the party with friends. He kept asking me to go on a date and I finally gave in. We went to Starbucks and spent the afternoon talking and the rest is history.

How long did you date before he popped the question? 8 years

How did he propose?  Rey proposed on Christmas Eve 2015, in front of our families. We were opening presents and he had thrown me off all month telling me he had got me the Apple Watch for Christmas. He used an Apple Watch box and placed the ring box inside. I unwrapped the paper from the box and could not understand why everyone was so excited for me to actually open the Apple Watch box. When I did, I saw the ring box and was speechless.

Where were you married and how did you pick the place?

Walt Disney World. Any one that knows us knows we are HUGE Disney fans; it is our second home. So it was the only place that seemed right.

What theme and/or colors have you chosen for your wedding and why?

Although we got married in Disney I wanted an elegant wedding. The colors we chose were purple and silver.

Where did you go for your honeymoon?

We did not take a honeymoon as Rey was scheduled to take the Florida Bar exam 2 weeks after the wedding. We are planning a 1year anniversary/honeymoon trip.

Why did you chose Wonderland Bridal for your dream dress?

I was referred to Wonderland by my co-worker (Patti’s sister). It was the first time I had ever tried on dresses and Patti knew exactly what I would love. Though she gave me the opportunity to try on every style dress, she saved the best for last, I did not want to take it off. I knew it was my dress.

Share your experience about your time with Wonderland Bridal.

I loved my experience at Wonderland. Patti and Alicyn are super friendly and knowledgeable. I loved that whether you are there to find your dream dress or just for a fitting they are attentive to you and only you. They went above and beyond to make sure everything about my dress was perfect.

What was the best part of your wedding day?

Everything! From the beautiful flower arrangements to the décor, and most of all seeing Rey smiling/surprised face when the ceremony doors opened.

Any advice to future couples currently planning a wedding?

For out of town guests (or all guests really) make a wedding website with any and all information you think guests might need (area hotels, directions, ceremony/reception times, dress code, weather, ect.) so that guests aren’t calling you.

What you need to know about the “Colored Wedding Dress” trend!

If you’re attending a wedding this year, chances are you will notice a huge change in the “not so white dress” the bride is wearing. That’s because white wedding dresses are so yesterday. More and more we are seeing our brides with a true vision when it comes to their wedding dresses and those visions have nothing to do with the color white. Look out for colors like champagne, ivory, almond, peach, blush, moscato and oyster.

As we start to prepare for our 2018 brides, you’ll notice more pops of color make their way onto the floor. Here are some of the dresses we currently have in Wonderland and more of what we are expecting at the end of the summer!

Love Story: Janna & Kyle

IMG_3388 (1)

We sat down with another beautiful Wonderland bride to get her love story. Meet Janna & Kyle, who were married December 17, 2016.

When and how did you meet?

Kyle and I went to the same high school, Okeechobee High School, however our paths never crossed at that point in our life. In the fall of 2012, I would return to my hometown of Okeechobee, FL from college in Gainesville, FL frequently to visit with family and friends, and on several occasions I would notice Kyle at my father’s house when my father would have people over to hang out to watch football or just hang around a fire while playing music. On December 22, 2012 I attended a Christmas party in my hometown at Pine Ridge Plantation (the location of our wedding venue 4 years later), where Kyle was also attending and at some point in the night he asked me on a sushi date. I always tell him, “You had me at sushi.” The very next day he took me on our first date to BeniHana for sushi, and that’s where it all began.

How long did you date before he popped the question?

We dated for 2.5 years before he popped the question on July 4, 2015.

How did he propose?

He proposed while in our favorite vacation spot of Sugarloaf Key, FL on a paddle board in the mangrove trees near the campground we frequently visit each summer, KOA Campground at Sugarloaf Key.

Where were you married and how did you pick the place?

We were married in Okeechobee, FL at Pine Ridge Plantation, which as I mentioned earlier is the location he asked me on our first date, so that played a huge part in picking the venue. We also chose this venue because we loved the quaint and simple appeal of the barn venue that we chose as our ceremony location.

What theme and/or colors have you chosen for your wedding and why?

Our theme was vintage yet elegant in a barn setting. Our colors were an array of purples (purple ombré as some may call it) and gray. We chose this style and our colors because we both knew from the start that we wanted our wedding to be unique, while also being simple at the same time.

Where did you go for your honeymoon?

We went to New York City for our honeymoon soon after our wedding, December 19-26, 2016.

Why did you choose Wonderland Bridal for your dream dress?

I chose Wonderland Bridal for my dream dress because it was close by where I am currently residing while in school and I knew I wanted to be in close distance for my dress fitting appointments. Little did I know that I would end up falling in love with this location and am now recommending to many of my friends and family who have recently started the wedding planning process.

Share your experience about your time with Wonderland Bridal.

When I arrived at Wonderland Bridal on December 19, 2015 with my bridal party, mother, and mother-in-law I just knew in my heart that I would walk away with THE dress. I was especially intrigued by the fact that I was the only girl that Alicyn spent with during my appointment. I loved that my party and myself were her only focus for that designated time. From the start, I had a style in mind and Alicyn began to choose the dresses that she thought would best fit the style I had in mind. The very first dress I tried on from her selection I loved and just thought it would be THE dress, however while I was trying on the other dresses from her selection, my Mom peeked in and said “please have her try this one on for me, I just know this would fit my Janna.” I waited until the last dress to try on the one my Mom suggested, and I am so thankful I have this memory to look back on because that is the dress I ended up falling in love with. In order to make sure I walked away with THE dress of my dreams, Alicyn suggested playing the “peek-a- boo game” where I tried on the first dress I loved and the last dress I fell in love with. I loved this game because it truly allowed me to see which dress I could see myself walking down the aisle to the man of my dreams on my wedding day. I ended up choosing the dress my Mom picked out which meant the absolute world to her and me, and that is a memory we will hold on to forever. As a whole, I loved my entire experience while picking out my dream dress and during each dress fitting, I truly felt like a princess at Wonderland Bridal. The overall atmosphere was nothing short of amazing and I will forever recommend this bridal boutique to any future bride.

What was the best part of your wedding day?

It’s honestly hard to say what was the best part of our wedding day because it truly was overall the best day of my life. But if I would have to pick my most memorable part of that day, it would have to either be walking down the aisle with my father at my right side to the man of my dreams or dancing with my husband to our first dance to the song, “You Make it Look So Easy” by Eric Church (my husband and I’s favorite artist).

The most meaningful part of the whole day to me was after being announced as Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Thomas Parramore and our officiant telling Kyle that he may now kiss the bride, in that moment I knew I truly married the one because not only did he plant a traditional kiss on my lips he also kissed me on my forehead directly after which made me feel as though I will forever be cherished and cared for by the man of my dreams.

I found this quote that solidified that I knew I found my forever soul mate after that meaningful event on my wedding day, “One kiss on the forehead is much sweeter than a thousand kiss on the lips. No lust but full of love and respect.” – Unknown

Any advice to future couples currently planning a wedding?

The number one piece of advice that I would like to give future couples planning a wedding is to never sweat the small stuff, as cliché as that sounds, it’s the truth. During the whole wedding planning process both myself and my now husband made sure that if at any point either of us would experience a moment of stress or exhaustion over the planning process we would take a moment and return back to the planning once our minds were cleared and at ease again. If there is anything else I could suggest would be to make sure that both partners are involved in the wedding process because it not only makes the whole process smoother with the help of two people but it also allows each person to put in their ideas for the big day to make the overall wedding day what both of you are hoping and wishing for when you become husband and wife. Lastly, on the day of the wedding, I want all future couples planning a wedding to know that at the end of the day you will be husband and wife no matter if your cake topper is missing (which happened to me, however shortly after it was found) or any other small or even big detail does not fall in place as it should. I promised myself that I would not allow any sort of moment of stress or worry take over my happiness that day, and I am so thankful that I did that because it allowed me to fully enjoy the day as a whole and not let anything get in the way of making sure that this day was the best day of my life, and that it was!

Love Story: Stephanie & Samuel

We sat down with another beautiful Wonderland bride to get her love story. Meet Stephanie & Samuel, who were married December 17, 2016.

When and how did you meet?
It was 2011. I added him one day on Facebook because we had a ton of mutual friends in college and I thought he was cute! We never officially “met” until one day he tapped me on the shoulder at a restaurant and said “Hey you’re my friend on Facebook!” I told him was short like me (which I liked), and he told me he respected my honesty, haha! We hung out a few times after that, and then he asked me to be his date for Valentine’s Day. He came over that night and made me AND my kitty a valentine’s dinner!

How long did you date before he popped the question?
3 ½ years.

How did he propose?

I am totally Disney obsessed, and I would talk to him about how I had always wanted to eat inside of Cinderella’s castle but had never gotten to. One day, he made the reservations for us to attend breakfast at Cinderella’s Castle. It was so beautiful and special. After we had finished breakfast, I asked if he was ready to leave, and he said “wait, we have a royal dessert coming too.” Just as he said that, our server came walking over to our table with a covered plate. When he pulled the cover off, there was a glass slipper, inscribed “Samuel and Stephanie 11.22.14 Dreams do come true” and it was surrounded by rose petals. He got on one knee, pulled out the ring and asked me to marry him! After I said yes, Princess Jasmine came over and hugged me! It was such a magical moment!

Where were you married and how did you pick the place?
We got married in Estero, FL. Our venue was at Grandezza Country Club. As soon as we walked in, we knew it was the right place for us. The staff was amazing, and the club was just so beautiful and elegant. It felt so right.

What theme and/or colors have you chosen for your wedding and why?

The theme was Cinderella. Cinderella has always been my favorite Disney princess, and since we got engaged at Cinderella’s Castle, we decided we wanted to make the theme for our wedding Cinderella too. So we chose Cinderella blue, white, and incorporated a lot of silver and golds.

Where did you go for your honeymoon?
We went to the Ashville/Brevard area of NC where we stayed in a cabin in the mountains. It was one week before Christmas, everything was so beautifully decorated, and the weather was amazing! One of the best weeks of our life!

Why did you chose Wonderland Bridal for your dream dress?
I was looking for my dream dress online, and found it. Stella York 5718. But I had a hard time finding a place that carried it. We called a few stores, and Wonderland Bridal was willing to bring it into the store for me to try on! The girls were so wonderful and kind. Always so willing to go above and beyond!

Share your experience about your time with Wonderland Bridal.
I remember trying on a few different dresses, and we saved the best for last. When Alicyn helped me put the dress on, she looked over at Patti and said “this is definitely the one.” Then I needed help finding jewelry that would match, and needed help finding my veil and Patti and Alicyn were there to help me every step of the way! With their help, I truly felt like real life Cinderella on my wedding day!

What was the best part of your wedding day?

This question is hard to answer, because I loved everything about our wedding day. It was truly the best day ever! But one of my fondest moments was the moment my father was walking me down the isle, and then I look up, and I see Sammy standing there waiting for me. It’s surreal and in that moment you’re looking into each other’s eyes, and you’re thinking “this is it, our happily ever after.”

Any advice to future couples currently planning a wedding?

Even if it may seem overwhelming and stressful at times, try to remember to still enjoy every minute of it. It goes by so fast. On your wedding day, soak it all in! It is truly going to be one of the best, most magical days of your lives!

Summertime and the living is easy. Just kidding, that’s not always the case especially when planning a wedding, but we’re here to ensure you all remain up-to-date with the latest and greatest wedding trends each season.

This seasonal wedding trend post will be a little different than our others because we have somewhat of a summer wedding expert in the house. Lindsey Swing of LLScene ( got married in the Summer of 2014 at The Breakers in Palm Beach, with no shortage of humidity and blazing hot temperatures. She’s here to give her insight on summer wedding trends and personal advice on how to tackle those sweaty temperatures, while looking like the bride you have always envisioned yourself to be.

Your Summer Wedding Dress

It goes without saying that you will want a comfortably airy dress that is lightweight and flattering under heated conditions. Some wedding dresses tend to be heavy and embellished, so I would avoid those types of dresses all together. I’m lucky enough to visit Wonderland Bridal regularly, so I’m fully confident you will find just what you’re looking for at their bridal boutique. You will see some of my favorite recommendations below.

Open Back Dress

A trend that will never go out of style, and even more perfect for to let some air into your dress during your summer wedding.

Plunging Necklines

This Sincerity Bridal dress has lace Illusion straps and plunging neckline in a lightweight delicate fabric for a hot summer day. It may look like a heavy dress, but it’s not! Achieve that ball gown look you have always dreamed of.

Crepe, Crepe and more Crepe!

This fabric is the end all be all to wedding gown elegance and comfort. But, what exactly is it?! Crepe is a light, soft, and thin fabric with a crinkled surface. Not only is this an up and coming wedding trend for all seasons, it’s the perfect material to capture unwanted sweat and moisture.

Jewelry Embellished Dresses

Two birds, one stone?! If you can look good doing it, then why not?! Implementing statement jewelry like diamonds and pearls as an attachment to your wedding dress is HUGE this year. Our Ashley & Justin dress does the work for you with this elegant open back embellished with pearls.

Light Weight Elegance

There’s nothing worse than having a heavy wedding dress, unless you have a heavy wedding dress in the summer heat. This is one of our favorite dresses to recommend to South Florida brides tying the knot in the summer.

Bridesmaid Dresses

The same applies for your bridesmaids. You all have a long day ahead of you,  which is very important to remember when picking your bridesmaid dresses. Wonderland Bridal’s Sorella Vita collection is PERFECT for your summer bridal party. Not only are the dresses beautiful, but they’re lightweight and flattering under any weather condition you may come upon. Bright hues are very popular for Summer 2017 bridesmaids.

Rather than going the “beach theme” route, embrace the “garden/boho theme” instead. This trend can be easily transitioned from spring to summer. Everyone remembers their summers as a kid, so get with your groom and implement some of your favorite summer memories into your summer wedding.

Chances are you will have a fabulous makeup artist that knows just what to use on your face to combat that “summer shine”. You want to glisten on your wedding day, not come off looking like a wet dog. Primer will be your best friend. Makeup primer is a base for foundation or face makeup that allows it to go on smoother and last longer. Formulas are available in cream, gel and powder. Before she does anything, your makeup artist will apply primer, so your makeup goes on smooth and remains consistent throughout the day.

Embrace the Backup Plan

I know this is tough to hear, but embrace it and make sure you love it. Most summer brides (including myself) decide to forgo an outside ceremony all together, but if you’re willing to take the chance you must be prepared to use your backup option. Not only is the rain unpredictable in the summer, the heat is just as bad. On my wedding day, we had planned for the cocktail hour to be outside until the temperatures reached to nearly 100 degrees that day. I was more than happy to move it inside.

Keep it Cool

Create a signature cocktail that will keep your guests hydrated and cool during cocktail hour. One of the latest and greatest wedding drink trends to look out for this summer has to be the Wine Smoothie! This frosted drink will be the talk of the town and show how much time and effort you put into the comfort of your guests. A wine smoothie consists of a fruity wine, like rose, blended with ice and fruits of your choice.
